Suspect arrested for illegal firearm possession

The Free State police in Tseki have arrested a foreign national for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to Free State police spokesperson Thabo Covane, officers were conducting routine enforcement operations at the Monontsha Border Post when they noticed a man attempting to cross from South Africa into Lesotho. “During the operation, officers observed an unknown male attempting to cross the border from South Africa into Lesotho,” Covane said.

Police intercepted the suspect and requested his travel documents, which included a valid passport. Officers then conducted a search and allegedly discovered a black 9mm pistol with live ammunition concealed around his waist. “The suspect failed to produce a valid licence to possess the firearm,” Covane explained.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court soon.
