Winter’s colder temperatures often bring an increased risk of household fires, prompting officials to urge residents to take extra precautions during the season.
According to the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (MMM) colder temperatures often lead to increased use of heaters, candles, paraffin stoves, and electrical appliances, all of which can pose serious risks if not used safely.
In light of this the Mangaung Fire Department has shared a range of practical winter fire safety tips aimed at protecting families, homes, and communities during the colder months.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially in high-risk areas where informal housing, overloaded electrical connections, and open flames can contribute to the rapid spread of fires. The community is urged to be aware of everyday fire risks by avoiding smoking in bed and never cooking while under the influence of alcohol.
Fire safety tips (as provided):
Paraffin safety
- Buy safe: Use sealed, child-proof containers from trusted sellers. Store paraffin away from children and heat.
- Place paraffin stove or heater on stable flat surfaces, 1m from flammables. Never refill paraffin heater or stove while it is still burning.
- Never leave heaters or cooking stoves unattended.
- Use sand or a fire extinguisher to extinguish paraffin fires.
Candle safety
- Use sturdy, non-flammable holders, ideally deep glass with sand.
- Keep 1m from curtains, paper, and other flammables.
- Extinguish candles fully before leaving a room or sleeping.
- Cut long candles in half.
Heater and electrical safety
- Ensure that gas heaters/fireplaces are checked annually.
- Check electrical cords for damage.
- Do not run extension cords under the mat.
