October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month in South Africa, with various organisations doing their part to promote early detection and treatment for both women and men.
On 25 October, Villa Avianto will host a High Tea in support of Reach for Recovery, an organisation that has been a lifeline for women with breast cancer for the past 58 years. Reach for Recovery is a volunteer-based network made up of survivors supporting other survivors. With 225 volunteers who have each faced their own breast cancer journeys, the organisation provides comfort, guidance, and hope to more than 6,500 women across South Africa every year.
Heading up Reach for Recovery in the Free State is Bloemfontein-based Dr Ilse de Witt, herself a breast cancer survivor. Reach for Recovery supplies breast prostheses to women who cannot afford reconstructive surgery, along with care packages that include post-operative cushions, hand-knitted drainage pump bags, and access to support groups. The organisation also focuses on educating communities, sharing lifesaving information to encourage early detection.

Guests attending the High Tea can look forward to a memorable morning of delicious food, inspirational talks, live entertainment by Emily Dangwa, and a variety of stalls to browse – all in support of a meaningful cause. Tickets are available on Villa Avianto’s website at R300 per person.
