The Free State will once again enjoy strong representation in the Proteas squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 12-player squad has been announced for the quadrennial showpiece, with no fewer than five Free State players selected to represent South Africa as the Proteas target a place in the semi-finals.
The headline inclusion is undoubtedly that of legendary defender Karla Pretorius, who will make her eagerly anticipated return to international netball after an absence of more than a year. Pretorius returned to the court earlier this year and immediately reminded everyone why she is regarded as one of the world’s finest defenders, captaining the Free State Crinums to an unbeaten campaign and a fifth Telkom Netball League title. Her return is a massive boost for South Africa, with her leadership, composure and wealth of experience expected to be invaluable both on and off the court.
Young rising star Karla Victor also earned selection and will be looking to make her mark on the international stage. Her pace, energy and fearless style of play add another exciting dimension to the Proteas as they prepare to test themselves against the best Commonwealth nations.
Captain Khanyisa Chawane will once again lead the national side.
Although she did not feature for the Crinums during this year’s league campaign, she remains one of South Africa’s premier players and a proven leader who consistently inspires those around her. Reliable mid-courter Refiloe Nketsa is another key member of the squad. Her work rate, vision and relentless energy make her one of the Proteas’ most dependable performers and she is expected to play a pivotal role throughout the tournament.
In the shooting circle, Rolene Streutker will once again provide the firepower. Widely respected for her accuracy and composure under pressure, Streutker has built an outstanding reputation through her club career in England and Australia and remains one of South Africa’s most reliable finishers.
Although goal shooter and goal attack Elmeré van der Berg is not a Free State player, she hails from Bloemfontein. Standing at 1.91 metres (6 ft 3 in) tall, Van der Berg is one of the most dominant shooters in world netball, renowned for her exceptional accuracy and impressive conversion rate.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will get underway in Glasgow on 23 July and conclude on 2 August, with the Proteas aiming to challenge the traditional powerhouses and return home with a medal. – MORGAN PIEK
