The National Department of Sport and Recreation has expressed shock at the outcome of the national audit of sport facilities that found most facilities in the country are not accessible to people with disabilities.
The department said – in an answer to a written question in parliament – that an audit found that 80% of sporting facilities across the country are not equipped to cater for people with disabilities.
The department conducted the audit in 2016 to establish where facilities are needed and which ones are in desperate need for refurbishment and repairs.
A total of 5022 facilities were counted nationally with 259 in the Free State, 102 in Northern Cape and 134 in North West.
The department is now going to allocate funds to provinces to make the necessary alterations to facilities so that they’re user-friendly to people with disabilities.
