Members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit in Bloemfontein acted swiftly to arrest a 42-year-old foreign national, confiscating illegal cigarettes and the truck used for its transport.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, explained that the arrest took place yesterday (29/07) at approximately 08:30. “The Anti-Gang Unit, acting on intelligence-led information, intercepted a Volvo truck suspected of transporting illicit cigarettes,” he said. “The interception took place tactically at the truck stop on the N8 road. The truck was allegedly en route from Bloemfontein to Lesotho.”
Officers searched the vehicle and discovered boxes of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R800 000. The cigarettes were discovered hidden under blankets in the truck’s cabin. “The driver was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes,” added the spokesperson. “He will appear in the Bloemfontein court soon.”
