Free State police in the Lejweleputswa district have issued a strong warning to criminals after arresting 14 suspects during a weekend crime-prevention operation. The arrests were linked to offences such as illegal liquor trading, drunk driving, and drug dealing.
Police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli confirmed that the operation began on Friday, targeting major routes and known crime hotspots, and immediately delivered significant results. “The operation concluded with 10 successes, directly impacting crime generators. Two suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor, one for dealing in dagga, and two illegal shebeens were shut down. Additionally, five fines were issued for various liquor-related offences,” Kareli said.
The operation continued through Sunday, leading to further arrests and penalties. “Two more individuals were arrested—one for driving under the influence and another for contravening the Immigration Act. Four additional fines were issued for violations of the Liquor Act,” he added.
Kareli further shared that the success of the operation was driven by strong community engagement and targeted searches. In total, police searched 608 people, inspected 344 vehicles, and conducted 28 compliance checks on businesses and premises.
