The Odendaalsrus Regional Court has sentenced Dumisane Matata to 20 years’ imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in a case dating back to July 2020.
According to Free State police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli, the incident occurred in Nyakallong when the victim was waiting at a local hiking spot with friends.
“The accused approached the group of children and requested their assistance in gathering wood from nearby bushes. While the other children refused and stayed behind, the 11-year-old victim accompanied him,” said Kareli.
Once they were in a secluded area, Matata threatened the child and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene. The incident was immediately reported to the Allanridge Police, who opened a rape case and launched an investigation.
Although the suspect was initially arrested, the matter was temporarily struck off the court roll pending DNA results. The case was later reassigned, and forensic analysis subsequently linked Matata to the crime. “Upon receiving the forensic feedback, the DNA analysis positively linked Matata to the crime,” Kareli said.
The successful conviction and sentencing mark the conclusion of a lengthy investigation and court process spanning several years.
