Rapist sentenced to life imprisonment

The Theunissen Regional Court has sentenced Matebesi Papikie Bambiso (40) to life imprisonment for rape following a brutal attack on a woman (46) in October 2024.

According to Free State police spokesperson, Palesa Thabana, the victim was walking home from a traditional ceremony when she was accosted by Bambiso and an accomplice. “The victim was attacked by the two males, struck on the head with a stone, and assaulted,” Thabana said.

Despite the violent assault, the victim was able to identify Bambiso, whom she knew. Both men then took turns raping her. The attack escalated further as the victim, left defenceless, was kicked and stabbed. Believing she had died, the suspects fled the scene after stealing her daughter’s cellphone.

The victim managed to regain consciousness and made her way to the police station in Theunissen, where she reported the incident and a case of rape was opened.

Following an investigation, Bambiso was arrested in November 2024. He remained in custody after being denied bail until the conclusion of the trial, which ultimately led to his conviction and sentencing.

Police have not yet confirmed developments regarding the second suspect.
