Two suspects arrested for assault

Two men, aged 23 and 27, have been arrested in connection with an alleged assault that left a man hospitalised in Bethlehem.

According to Free State police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, the incident occurred on Friday night (17/07) while police were responding to reports of a fight at the corner of Baartman and Muller streets in Bethlehem. “Upon arrival, officers found the victim with bruises to his face and a broken left leg. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment,” said Mophiring.

Police allege that the victim was assaulted by two male suspects, who also sprayed an unidentified substance into his face, causing severe irritation to his eyes. The suspects reportedly fled the scene in a white branded Toyota Hilux bakkie.

The motive for the assault remains unclear and is the subject of ongoing investigation. A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been opened. The two suspects are expected to appear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Monday (20/07).
