Welkom police still looking for bogus hitchhikers

Duane Petrus – Welkom police are still looking for three robbery and rape suspects who posed as hitchhikers and attacked a couple last week.

Free State police spokesperson, Kethabile Mofokeng, says the couple were pointed with a firearm from the back seat immediately after the suspects entered the car.

She says they instructed the 42-year-old man to drive in the direction of Theunissen, and later ordering him to change the direction back to Welkom.

The man’s feet and hands were tied with a rope when they arrived in Lake View and the couple was robbed of the cellphones and bank cards.

While one suspect drove to an ATM to withdraw money from the man’s account, the remaining two took turns in raping the 23-year-old woman.

After the ordeal, the man was loosened and instructed to drive away from the scene.
