No arrests made in N8 cash-in-transit robbery

No arrests have yet been made regarding the cash-in-transit robbery and attempted murder that took place on Saturday (16/5) near Botshabelo-West T-junction.

At the time of print (20/5), the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) confirmed this. Lt. Col. Zweli Mohobeleli says the investigations into organised crime-related cash-in-transit robberies remain a priority, as statistical information and crime patterns are used to identify trends, syndicates, modus operandi, and hotspot areas linked to these incidents.

“Intelligence-driven operations and coordinated investigations are underway as part of efforts to combat and prevent cash-in-transit robberies.”

WO Fikiswa Matoti, spokesperson of the Hawks in the Free State, says the incident in question occurred at approximately 07:30 when three security guards travelling in an armoured cash delivery vehicle, accompanied by two guards in an escort vehicle, were allegedly attacked while travelling along the N8.

“It is alleged that the suspects robbed the security guards of one service pistol and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene,” says Matoti.

Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to alert the nearest police station or contact detective Col. Mofokeng of the Hawks on 075 988 1432.

A similar incident occurred in Hillside View in Bloemfontein during April, leaving a traffic officer injured. Addressing concerns about the specific robbery and attempted murder, MEC for community safety, roads and transport Jabu Mbalula appealed to law enforcement authorities and community members who could provide information to assist in the investigation.

“This senseless violence not only puts individuals in harm’s way but also puts communities at risk. We will not let criminal elements challenge law and order in our province.”
