A student debt alleviation race is to be held to raise funds to support students who are provisionally registered at the University of the Free State (UFS) and at risk of deregistration due to outstanding fees before the 27 June deadline.
The event will be hosted by the Bloemfontein Campus Student Representative Council (SRC) under the leadership of SRC president Ogorogile Moleme.
It was designed as both a fundraising and awareness campaign, combining physical activity with social impact to highlight the realities of student financial distress in higher education, he said.
“Besides the health and social benefits of running, we believe running is one of the most effective ways to raise awareness about student debt within our institution, while also promoting fitness and healthy living – something often compromised by the stress of financial instability. The metaphor of a marathon reflects the journey of alleviating student debt: it is not an overnight success, but a long, difficult process that ultimately has a finish line.”
He added the SRC’s goal extends beyond fundraising. “We are not only trying to raise money, but also to highlight the broader issue of student debt and its impact on access to education.”
Moleme revealed approximately 2,000 students are currently at risk of deregistration due to partially paid or outstanding registration fees. Funds raised through the race will supplement existing financial support systems such as Imbewu, helping students remain registered for the remainder of the academic year.
The event will be open to students, members of the public, businesses, and organisations.
“We are hoping for strong participation, because the more people join, the greater the impact we can make,” he said.
“We have already lost too many students due to financial constraints, and we cannot afford to lose more. This is not only a UFS issue – it reflects a wider challenge across higher education institutions.” Moleme highlighted the broader social impact of student debt. “Student debt is not just about remaining registered; it also affects access to necessities. Some students struggle with food insecurity and housing instability.”
Addressing students directly, Moleme encouraged resilience. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that no student is left behind. The priority is to keep students registered, because for many, that determines whether they can complete their qualifications,” he said. The race will take place on 23 May at Pellies Park Stadium at the UFS Bloemfontein campus at 07:30. Tickets for the 5km race cost R60 and are available at the SRC offices on the Bloemfontein campus.
