UFS students share challenges of balancing studies and wellness

As academic pressure continues to rise during examination and assignment season, students across the University of the Free State (UFS) are placing greater focus on protecting their mental wellbeing while maintaining academic performance. Many students say preparation, healthy routines, and support systems are helping them manage the demands of university life during one of the busiest periods of the year.

Third-year Humanities student Sibongile Motsepe from the Bloemfontein Campus said students often underestimate the importance of mental health during stressful academic periods. “Mental health is one of the most important aspects of health that people often neglect. Once it is affected, it can also impact your physical and social well-being. I take necessary measures such as managing my time and studying early to ensure that I am not under heavy pressure when examination or assessment periods arrive. I also make sure that I get enough rest to avoid fatigue and mental shutdown,” said Motsepe.

Students also emphasised the importance of rest, nutrition, and social support during examination periods. Rethabile Khoeli from the Qwaqwa Campus said healthy habits and staying connected to others can help students cope with pressure. “I sleep a lot and drink water. During assignment periods, I make sure to eat properly because I usually work under pressure at the last minute. It also helps to join groups, spend time with friends, or participate in organisations that keep your mind active because it is never easy dealing with mental health challenges alone,” Khoeli said.

A Bachelor of Administration Honours Degree senior student Qiniso Mpho Ralethata said planning ahead and creating rewarding study routines helps maintain focus during stressful periods. “Mental health is the ability to think clearly and make reasonable decisions without emotional or psychological strain. I prepare early and make sure I have things that motivate me to study, such as snacks. I reward myself by watching an episode on Netflix or TikTok after reaching my study target for the day,” she said. Ralethata added that study groups, revision plans, and trusted support systems remain essential tools for students navigating examination season.
