The Central University of Technology has appointed Professor Mogomme Alpheus Masoga as its new Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, effective from 1 August 2026. The appointment marks a significant step in the university’s efforts to strengthen academic leadership, advance innovation, and enhance student success as part of its long-term institutional vision.
CUT said Masoga’s appointment aligns with the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and the implementation of its 2026–2030 strategic plan, which focuses on impactful research, industry collaboration, and a student-centred academic culture.
He brings decades of experience in higher education, research, and university leadership. He is widely recognised as a respected scholar in the fields of oral history, Africanism, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. His appointment comes at a time when CUT continues positioning itself as a modern University of Technology with a growing focus on innovation and relevance within the higher education sector.
Academically, Masoga holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of the Free State. He began his tertiary studies at the former University of Natal Pietermaritzburg campus, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree, two Honours degrees, and a Master of Arts degree. He later obtained a Master of Arts in Musicology with distinction from the University of South Africa and also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Throughout his career, he has held several senior leadership positions in the higher education sector. These include serving as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Free State and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zululand. He has also served as a Research Professor at both the University of Limpopo and the University of Venda.
Beyond academia, he remains active in several national structures. He currently chairs the boards of the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences and the South African BRICS Think Tank. In addition, he serves on several higher education and curriculum transformation committees linked to the Council on Higher Education.
CUT said it is confident that Masoga’s leadership and extensive experience will contribute meaningfully to the university’s academic growth and strengthen its vision of producing graduates equipped for the demands of a rapidly evolving world.
