Two athletes of the University of the Free State will be competing at the upcoming CAA African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius this week.
Yolandi Stander will be representing South Africa at the Championships in the discus for women.
Stander won gold at the South African Championships in April and this earned her a spot in the 89-member team to represent South Africa.
Representing the Free State in Cape Town at the national championships, Stander missed out on a new personal best with a throw of 57.90m for the gold. She threw a personal best of 57.93m last year.
Stander will be joined in Mauritius by her fellow Kovsie, Lerato Sechele, who will be representing Lesotho in the triple jump for women. Sechele jumped 13.46 m in Potchefstroom last year, which ranked her number one in Africa.
Her personal best and the Lesotho record is 13.57 m, which she jumped at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 where she finished fourth.
Due to Covid-19, the African Championships will be held for the first time since 2018 in Nigeria. During the 2018 championships, Sechele took the bronze medal with a jump of 13.31m.
The 2022 African Championships in the island national will run until 12 June. This will be the last major continental event before the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
The Commonwealth Games will take place in the English Midlands from 28 July to 8 August. – MORGAN PIEK
