SASSA condemns illegal sale of queue positions at offices

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has condemned the illegal practice of individuals selling queue positions at its local offices, describing it as an exploitation of vulnerable people who depend on social grants

SASSA CEO Themba Matlou said reports of the growing practice are unacceptable, unlawful and exploitative of people who rely on social assistance for their livelihoods.

Matlou warned that action will be taken against those involved, including any SASSA officials who may have enabled or failed to prevent the practice. “We take serious exception to these acts as the agency as they happen at the doorsteps of our offices and create an impression that we are complicit and encourage this exploitation of our people. We condemn this in the strongest possible terms, and we cannot allow it to happen,” he emphasised.

The agency said it is strengthening security measures and working closely with law enforcement agencies to curb the practice and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

SASSA also acknowledged service delivery challenges at some of its offices, noting that these are compounded by broader systemic issues. “We are working tirelessly to enhance our queue management systems to ensure fair and orderly access. This will reinforce priority service channels for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups,” Matlou said.

In addition, Matlou encouraged beneficiaries to make use of the agency’s newly introduced eLife Certification self-service online portal to improve access to services and reduce the need to visit SASSA offices.
