The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) in the Free State and Northern Cape regions will hold a three-day congress in Bloemfontein, starting from Friday 22 September to Sunday 24 September.
The meeting will kick off with a presentation of the union’s organizational and political report which will underline key issues affecting the union and its members. The Congress also aims to reflect on the current state of the organization, as well as the greater political, socio-economic and international landscape and how these affect the country.
Among other things, a three-year programme of action will be adopted at the congress, where campaign work and the election of the union’s new regional office bearers and the central executive committee delegates will be discussed. The union’s newly elected regional office bearers will be announced on Sunday 24 September.
Those expected to attend the congress include the provincial leaders from the Congress of the South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and also from the African National Congress (ANC). Saccawu was founded in 1975 as CCAWUSA (the Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union). In 1989 in response to the call by Cosatu for “One Industry, One Union” they merged with other unions in the sector to form Saccawu. Saccawu is an affiliate of Cosatu and also operates in eight regions, namely the Eastern Cape, Free State/Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Northern??, North West-Vaal, Western Cape, and Witwatersrand regions.
