A public hearing which will address issues related to gender transformation at tertiary institutions is being held at the University of the Free State today.
Students and staff are requested to comment on the university’s compliance with Gender Transformative Legislation and how well policies that promote gender equality have been implemented.
Among the issues to be addressed at the hearing is gender and the university’s racial component, the funding of transformative projects, sexual harassment and policies on violence and recruitment policies especially with regards to implementing transformation.
Submissions on these matters will be taken by the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), which is an organization independent from the university. The CGE is a Chapter 9 institution that was established in terms of Section 187 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in order to promote respect for gender equality and the protection, development and attainment of gender equality.
The CGE shall advance promote and protect gender equality in South Africa through undertaking research, public education, policy development, legislative initiatives, effective monitoring and litigation.
The event, which started at 10:00 and ends at 12:00 today, is held at the CR Swarts Building at the UFS Bloemfontein campus. – Pulane Choane
