Ward 3 residents were urged by the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to go visit voting stations next month to ensure that all their details are captured correctly on the Independent Electoral Commission’s database ahead of upcoming 2019 elections.

Speaking to residents of Phahameng, Silver and Dark City, Mangaung’s Council Speaker Mxolisi Siyonzana said that it was of the utmost importance to ensure that their addresses and registration details are correct.

The IEC will be in Bloemfontein at various voting stations on 10 and 11 March 018 as part of a national campaign to update the voters’ roll. All 22 612 voting stations around the country will open for the public between 08h00 and 17h00 on these two dates to assist new voters, allow voters that are already registered to update their address and details and finally, allow already registered voters who have moved since they registered to re-register in their correct voting district.

Siyonzana said that the municipality is aware of some of the issues at play for some who are unable to register due to housing challenges. “We are aware that many of you do not have homes and that is what is preventing you from registering and voting. To address this, we are working on a mixed development which will cater to the needs of both low and income earners,” Siyonzana said.

Also at this gathering was provincial Premier Ace Magashule, who said that he was unhappy with the fact that low-cost housing projects such as the Silver City project are taking so long. Magashule vowed to put pressure on those contractors as his term draws to an end.

Siyonzana and Magashule were speaking at an outreach programme which was an initiative of the Municipality.

The programme aimed to handover school shoes to disadvantaged learners from nine primary schools in Mangaung. Attending the event was also Minister of Energy, David Mahlobo who forms part of a special task team assigned to deal with constituents in the Free State.

This event was held on Friday at Silver City in Phahameng.
