The Electoral Commission (IEC) is encouraging South Africans, particularly young people, to take advantage of the upcoming voter registration weekend as preparations continue for the local government elections on 4 November.
On 20 and 21 June, all 23,706 voting stations across the country will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 to allow eligible citizens to register to vote, verify their registration status, and update their details, including residential addresses.
The registration drive forms part of the IEC’s commitment to making voter registration easier and more accessible and bringing it closer to communities. To vote in the elections, citizens must be South African, at least 18 years old on election day, and registered on the voters’ roll. Voters must also present either a smart ID card, green bar-coded ID book, or a valid temporary identity certificate.
Chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said the voter registration weekend aligns with the IEC’s election planning framework.
Mamabolo also encouraged citizens to make use of the IEC’s online services to register and check their voting status. The commission has reported growing use of online registration platforms.
Between November and March, a total of 260,205 new voters were added to the voters’ roll, with 132,092 registering online and 128,113 using voter management devices.
Online voter registration is available 24 hours a day at registertovote.elections.org.za.
