The case against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, with regards to his alleged contravention of the 1959 Riotous Assemblies Act has been postponed until 27 July 2018.
Malema briefly appeared at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday 6 April 2018. The prosecution asked that the matter be postponed to July as Malema made an application to challenge the constitutionality of the law used to charge him. The matter is still to be heard at the North Gauteng High Court and Malema will appear at the latter court again on 23 April 2018.
The charges faced by Malema relate to two incidents in 2014 when he called on his supporters in Bloemfontein and Newcastle to occupy unoccupied land.
After his court appearance Malema spoke to his party’s supporters on pertinent issues the country is facing at the moment, such as the land issue, former premier Ace Magashule’s alleged legacy of corruption and R20 million party and finally, Winnie Mandela’s death.
In his address to party supporters Malema maintained that the charges leveled against him are nonsensical. He further said that the matter should be struck off the roll at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court until the North Gauteng High Court comes back with a ruling on the matter. He said the case is time-consuming and is also costing the government a lot of money. – Pulane Choane
