GALOOME SHOPANE The Independent Electoral Commission is pleased with young people’s outcome this past voter registration weekend.
The IEC’s Kate Bapela says their marketing strategies and using social media have helped gun in young people to register to vote.
Bapela says about 26 thousand young people between the ages of 20 and 29 have registered in the Free State.
She says although the number is still low, it has grown and that is what is important.
“We have reached the 50% mark, when we went into the voter registration weekend, the age category between the ages of 20-29 was at 29.1 % on the voters’ roll. As we speak this afternoon we are seating at 54.5 %,” says Bapela.
She says “this means that we have really done extremely well.”
According to Bapela “ our 18- to 19-year-age band has tripled on the voters’ roll.”
Municipal Electoral offices are still open to people who still want to register, and the IEC will announce another official date to register.
