Foreign national arrested for stealing Eskom infrastructure

The Free State police in Welkom have arrested a foreign national (47) in connection with stolen infrastructure. According to the police spokesperson, Lorraine Earle, they acted on information they received about a house storing stolen property.

“POP Unit members acted on intelligence received from one of their members regarding a house in Doorn, suspected of storing stolen property. Upon arrival at the identified premises, two Eskom transformers as well as Eskom and Matjhabeng Local Municipality copper cables were discovered on site,” she said.

Earle further mentioned that Eskom officials were called and they positively identified the stolen infrastructure. “Officials from both Eskom and Matjhabeng were summoned to the scene and positively identified the items as property belonging to their respective institutions. The estimated value of the recovered equipment is approximately R110 000,” she added.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon on possession of suspected stolen property charges.
