The teenage tennis sensation from Bloemfontein, Donna le Roux, has once again outdone herself on the court, this time during the Tennis SA Junior National Championships in the City of Roses.

On Tuesday, the star player earned herself a national title in the girls’ singles as well as in the girls’ doubles.

The second-seeded Le Roux won the singles competition for girls’ under-16 by beating Allegra van der Walt with ease by claiming a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Last year she played in the under-16 final as well, however, she fell short at the last hurdle.
Le Roux then went on to back up her singles performance by winning the doubles along with Morgan Jordaan. The pair made light work in the final by beating Korona Rugara and Abigail Wheeler 6-0 and 6-1.

Le Roux told Bloemfontein Courant that she was delighted to be able to bury the disappointment from last year by claiming two national titles at her “home courts” in Bloemfontein.

“It’s a big privilege to have won the under-16 nationals this year, especially having lost last year in the final,” said the ever-bubbly Le Roux.

“I feel that I have played well in this tournament and I have worked very hard for it.
“The support I received from everyone was very helpful and I’m grateful for it – it gave me a lot of confidence on the court to play my best.

“My doubles partner Morgan and I also won the doubles tournament, as well as in a previous tournament. We played very well together and it was certainly a good two weeks of tennis.”

In the boys’ under-18 singles final, unfortunately, Cornel Liebenberg fell short with a three-set defeat to the second-seeded Rudiger Dusselberg. Dusselberg won the final 2-6, 7-6, and 6-2. Liebenberg and his Free State partner, Lian du Toit, did however beat Drikus de Jager and Frans-Willem van der Merwe 5-7, 7-6, and 10-6 to win the doubles competition.
In the boys’ under-12 final, the 16th-seeded Nathan Herbert of Bloemfontein was beaten 6-2 and 6-1 by the 3rd-seeded Juvan van Pletzen. Herbert and his partner, Awert Viljoen, beat the number one seeds, Keegan Groenewald and Tristan Summers, 7-5 and 6-2 in the final of the under-12 boys’ doubles. – MORGAN PIEK
