The DA in the Free State have some serious concerns regarding the tabling of the 204/15 Adjustment Appropriation Budget.
According to DA’s David van Vuuren, the province should be thankful for the little money that they received. Van Vuuren explained that the additional R18 million appropriated to the Free State by the National Treasury offers little comfort to a provincial government on the edge of a fiscal depth. He was speaking after Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman presented the budget to the Free State Legislature on Thursday in Bloemfontein.
Van Vuuren stressed that the allocation of funds will not be enough for various provincial departments to deliver key mandates.
“It’s too little too late. We are thankful for the MEC to put aside money for the three departments that we feel needs funding the most which is education, health and police, roads and transport. I think government still need political will to make this work and to save money and stop the wastage’s,” he said.
Van Vuuren explained that provincial Department of Health and Education are struggling with financial shortfalls due in accruals. He said accruals for Health are almost R800 million and R1,2 billion for Education.
