A local musician’s opera and classical journey started in grade 7 and he gradually started singing solo pieces in grade 10, when his talent became acknowledged and recognised.
Dumisani Rini furthered his musical studies at the University of the Free State’s Odeion School of Music where he also won the Human Naudé scholarship in 2021.
Rini is currently part of the Central University of Technology’s Great CUT choir. Rini and the choir recently performed at the Buang Moloto competition held in Rustenburg and attained third position.
“I sang a western piece called ‘Hear us O Lord’ and I could see that it moved the crowd,” he expressed.
The 29-year-old classical singer enjoys singing in Italian, French, Xhosa and Zulu. “I like a challenge and so far, learning the French pieces has been quite the challenge for me!
“Although the arts does not have sufficient funds, especially when it comes to opera and classical music, the bigger Bloemfontein’s art scene has always been very supportive of my talent.
Various government departments as well as the Musicon have hired me to sing a few pieces at corporate functions,” Rini said.
He further mentioned that this encourages him to pursue his dream, while saving up for the future. Rini’s hope for the future would be to end up as a wellrenowned artist in London or Germany
