GALOOME SHOPANE Cable theft is to blame for the prolonged lack of water supply in Masilonyana Local Municipality, particularly in Winburg. This is according to Masilonyana Local Municipality Zongezile Ntjwabula.
Ntjwabula says safe drinking water in Winburg is available, although in limited capacity. He says Winburg depends on raw water supplies, which have been drying out.
“To augment our water supply a project of three boreholes to the value of R4 million have been completed in Winburg,” he states.
He says that the project is being affected from time to time by cable theft. “ People are stealing cables from the very same boreholes that were installed there to augment water supply”.
He says on a long-term basis the municipality will be implementing a project for the construction of a bulk raw water pipe line worth R40 million.
Ntjwabula says they have received commitment from the provincial department to assist in the provincial government to assist them.
