SABRINA DEAN – The pending Mangaung water crisis is likely to get top-level intervention with Water Affairs Minister Nomvula Mokonyane scheduled to meet with relevant stakeholders in the Metro tomorrow.
Provincial water affairs spokesperson Kido Tohoabala told Bloemfontein Courant a meeting today between the department, Bloemwater and the Mangaung Metro was postponed to tomorrow when the Minister will be in attendance. She says the Mokonyane is expected to look into water issues across the province but that the main focus of the meeting will be on water restrictions that were supposed to be implemented in the Mangaung Metro area from 1 July.
The restrictions were signed and published by water affairs acting director general Trevor Balzer in the Government Gazette in March. He last month confirmed to Bloemfontein Courant that the restrictions are necessary due to insufficient rainfall in the Modder/Caledon catchment area.
The Mangaung Metro was supposed to discuss the issues in a council meeting on Monday but scrapped the item from the agenda because it is apparently still waiting for a report from Bloemwater.
Bloemfontein Courant has so far been unable to reach Bloemwater Chief Executive Limakatso Moorosi for comment on the issue.
