The Central University of Technology held its graduation ceremonies from Monday 26 March to Thursday 29 March 2018. Family and friends came from far and wide to celebrate this prestigious event. Students were dressed to impress, taking their first steps into the future in style.
The twins, Zandile and Zanele Machimane, were ecstatic to get their degree in the same week even though they didn’t study at the same institution. Zandile obtained her Civil Engineering diploma at CUT and is currently busy with her B-Tech degree. She said, “I have already applied to do my master’s in Civil Engineering, but I’ve already received a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom, so I am very happy. I am also part of the Soil Mechanic Research group with Professor Theron.” Her twin sister, Zanele, is currently busy with her master’s and received her Honours degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand on Thursday 22 March 2018.
Cyprian Mogane, a 41-year-old blind student, achieved his B-Tech degree in Public Management. According to a CUT media release, Mogane definitely did not let his impairment stand in his way when he became one of the 3 668 CUT graduates to walk down the aisle. He previously qualified in Occupational Directed Education Practice and Training at Corporate College International (CCI) and obtained a Public Management Diploma from UNISA.

Technology degree cum laude. “I am here with my family and I have been waiting for this day for so long. I am currently a junior lecturer for first year students at CUT. I have also enrolled for my master’s.” Athenkosi Mvimbi also studied B-Tech Information Technology Software Development at the CUT. “I am currently working at a pharmaceutical company,” she said.
Students, lecturers and supervisors can also interact fruitfully and productively perform outside the classroom environment at the CUT, something that has been proven by technology once again.
Thomas Frederick Dreyer, who is currently based in Abu Dhabi, graduated cum laude, achieving his master’s in Human Resource Management through distance learning. He is only one of thirteen master’s degree graduates in this field. Dreyer flew to Bloemfontein for his graduation and met with his supervisor, Prof. Deseré Kokt for the first time. His research topic was “An expatriate mentoring plan for Abu Dhabi Oil and Gas Industries (GASCO).”
