ANC retains seats in Free State

The ANC has retained seats in both the Mangaung and Dihlabeng Municipalities in the Free State following municipal by-elections that were held on Thursday.

OFM News reports, Johannes Nhlapo will now lead ward 20 in Clarens in Dihlabeng while Motlhokung Theodorah Mosala will lead Ward 11 in the Manguang Metro. The IEC in the province says the party retained seats it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The December 9 by-elections held in the Free State were part of those that took place in 24 wards across 17 municipalities in all nine provinces.

OFM News on Wednesday reported that of the 24 by-elections, five took place in Central South Africa with two in the Free State, one in the North West and another two in the Northern Cape.

The IEC spokesperson in the Free State  Mmathabo Rasengane in a statement says the IEC wishes to express its gratitude to voters who came out to vote and followed Covid-19 regulations.

“We also express our thanks to the political parties, their candidates and agents for their support, cooperation and contribution to the success of these by-elections. Thanks must also be extended to the South African Police Services (SAPS) for being a constantly dependable partner in the delivery of safe and peaceful elections,” said Rasengane.
