Women empowerment remains to be seen

REFILWE GAESWE

A lot of progress is needed to empower women in various levels of government.

This is according to Yolande Bouka, analyst of the Institute Security Studies. She says as this year’s African Union Summit theme is about women empowerment, it remains to be seen whether women will be empowered on either an international organization such as the African Union or national levels.

The African Union is currently holding its 25th summit in Johannesburg with the theme “Year of women empowerment and development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”. The AU summit started on 7 June and it will end on 15th June. Bouka says the implementation of women empowerment remains to be seen.

“It is remains uncertain whether or not there will be any additional resolutions with regard to women. I think what we would like to see is specific tools to implement the instrument the AU has already put in place,” says Bouka.
