A coordinated crackdown by the Vala Umgodi task team has resulted in the arrest of multiple suspects linked to illegal mining operations and the sale of counterfeit goods in various parts of the Free State.
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, a multidisciplinary team working with mine security, uncovered an illegal mining operation near Odendaalsrus in the early hours of Tuesday, 15 July 2025.
“At approximately 04:00, while on patrol, the team surprised a group of males who fled in various directions upon seeing the police. One 34-year-old suspect was apprehended,” said Kareli.
He confirmed that two industrial water pumps, which were being used in the illicit operation, were seized during the arrest. “Further tracing and investigation led to the arrest of six additional suspects, aged between 22 and 52, all implicated in illicit mining activities,” Kareli added.
In a separate incident a day earlier, on Monday 14 July at around 15:30, members of the Vala Umgodi operation conducted a self-initiated compliance inspection of tuckshops in Dewetsdorp.

“Upon arrival at a local supermarket, members discovered a significant quantity of counterfeit goods and illicit cigarettes,” Kareli said. “The alleged owner of the shop, a foreign national, was immediately arrested.”
Officers recovered over 239 cartons of illicit cigarettes hidden among the shelves, with an estimated street value of R50,000.
“All arrested suspects will appear in court soon to face charges related to illicit mining and dealing in counterfeit goods,” said Kareli, noting that investigations are ongoing.
