The University of the Free State’s (UFS) Professor Abdon Atangana has been elected a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
According to the UFS website, the applied mathematics professor at the Institute for Groundwater at the UFS also received TWAS’s award for mathematics in 2020. Atangana is described as a man who is known for his research to develop a new fractional operator, the Atangana-Baleanu operator, which is to model real world problems.
TWAS has been described as the voice of science in the South and is working towards the advancement of science in developing countries. It supports sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy. The president of TWAS, Professor Mohamed HA Hassan, congratulated Atanga on his achievement.
“Your election as fellow is a clear recognition of your outstanding contribution to science and its promotion in the developing world. We will be honoured to have you among our members,” he said.
He added that candidates elected as part of TWAS fellows are scientists who contribute to their respective fields, meet international standards of excellence and have distinguished themselves in efforts to promote science in developing countries.
