Bloemfontein and South Africa at large are mourning the death of Tshegofatso Molatlou, better known to fans as Michelle (her character in the soapie Generations), who passed away on Tuesday, 19 December.
According to a statement issued by her family, she lost her battle with cervical cancer at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein. “We are heartbroken to share and confirm the news that Tshegofatso Molatlou, affectionately known as ‘Michelle’ has passed away,” the statement reads.
“Michelle was surrounded by lots of love from family and friends. She succumbed to her battle with cervical cancer on Tuesday 19 December 2017 at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein. While we mourn the loss of a very wonderful, humble and caring spirit, we also celebrate her remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves,” reads the statement.
Meanwhile, tributes on social media have poured in from fans, colleagues and celebrities who have all spoken on Molatlou’s character and have expressed their grief and condolences.
Molatlou was the last Miss Black SA winner and will be remembered for speaking out on stereotypes levelled against beauty queens and those in the modelling industry. She has also acted in a few local productions such as Mokgonyana Matswale, Kgalelo Pelo as well as popular soapie Generations. She is survived by her two children and parents. Her funeral service will be held at the Boikhuco Old Age Home in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 23 December 2017.
