MEC for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport; Sam Mashinini, wishes all road users a safe journey to their various destinations.
“I hereby call on you drivers and all road users out there, to please respect each other as well as passengers in all motor vehicles on the road. Please keep a good attitude as a driver, adhere to and observe all rules of the road, because we all have a responsibility of promoting road safety,” says Mashinini.
The department says in a statement the Free State Provincial Government has made great strides in improving the road infrastructure by investing in the construction and completion of a number of provincial roads and roads linking towns. This effort is towards achieving a decrease of road crashes by 50% in support of the Decade of Road Safety 2020.
“Road crash fatalities and injuries represent an unacceptably high global problem affecting all sectors of society. Drivers, pedestrians and all road users alike run the risk of dying on the roads due to irresponsible driving habits such as speeding, use of alcohol, fatigue and overtaking when it is not safe to do so,” says the department
To arrive alive, the department offers the following advice:
- Inspect your vehicles prior to taking a journey,
- Do not speed or exceed speed limits set for the road
- Be well rested before embarking on a long journey
- Rest every 200 kilometers to avoid fatigue
- Fasten your seatbelt
- Do not use your cellphone while driving
- Keep a safe following distance
- Make sure the vehicle license disc and driver’s license are valid
