• 1982: Darryl Sittler, on advice from his doctor, leaves the Toronto Maple Leafs because of mental depression.
• 1998: Vandals decapitate Copenhagen’s Little Mermaid.
• 1993: The Swedish Government announces that it will give financial aid totalling about 110 million Rand to the ANC and other organisations in South Africa, which are involved in religious, educational, cultural, and human rights fields. This aid that has already been given over a number of years will be phased out when ANC and others start regular elections campaign.
• 1995: Allan Boesak, charged with financial impropriety, agrees not to take up the post of Ambassador to the United Nations.

• 1896: The Die Presse newspaper (Germany) publicly announces Wilhelm Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays and their potential for new methods of medical diagnoses in a front-page article
• 1976: The SABC starts regular daily TV transmissions after trial transmissions during 1975.
• 1940: FCC hears 1st transmission of FM radio with clear, static-free signal.
• 1946: "Show Boat" opens at Ziegfeld Theater NYC for 417 performances.
• 1975: Charlie Smalls’ "Wiz," premieres in NYC
Sports:
• 1808: The first recorded cricket match in South Africa takes place between two defence force teams in Cape Town.
• 1931: 1st woman to purchase a baseball team Lucille Thomas purchases Topeka franchise in the Western League.
• 1998: The cricket team of South Africa suffers an innings defeat in the second test against Australia in Sydney. Shane Warne takes 11 wickets.
• 1971: US heavyweight "Sonny" Liston’s (36) corpse found.
• 2009: The Proteas become the first South African team in history to win a Test cricket series in Australia.
