• 1979: The South African Barbarians rugby team completes its controversial tour of Britain with minimal disruption but against a background of condemnation from African and Commonwealth countries.
• 1988: 24th Olympic games close at Seoul, Korea.
• 1991: Steffi Graf becomes the youngest woman to win 500 professional tennis matches.
• 2009: Rio de Janeiro is elected the host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
