·1867: Karl Marx’ "Das Kapital" published.
·1910: Prof Petrus Johannes Nienaber, author and expert in literature, and collector of two complete sets of Afrikaans books, is born in the district of Fauresmith, OFS.
·1927: Prof. Christiaan Engelbertus (Chris) Lampbrecht, choir master and adaptor of SA folk music, is born in Bloemfontein.
·1942: Little Golden Books (children books) begins publishing.
·1998: SA’s first commercial service television station depending solely on advertising, e.tv, starts broadcasting.

·1945: Heavyweight champ Joe Louis is discharged from army.
·1967: Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Ladies’ LA Golf Open.
·1972: 1st games of World Hockey Association.
·1975: Muhammad Ali TKOs Joe Frazier in 15 for heavyweight boxing title in "The Thrilla in Manila".
·1977: Brazilian soccer great Pele retires with 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.
