The number of social workers in the Free State is declining as most are leaving the province.
This is according to Gcotyiswa Mtiya from the Provincial Department of Social Development. Mtiya says many social workers resign due to challenges and better opportunities in other provinces. She was speaking as the world commemorates International Social Workers’ Day on 15 March.
According to Mtiya, the provincial office has close to 26 social workers while at municipalities the numbers vary ranging between 40 and 80, by district, respectively.
“Some of the things that are related to social work are done without the interest of the social workers. Social workers are doing a great job that is really not recognised, of which everybody is aware. Social work is a spiritual profession, which means giving yourself to contribute to the lives of the people. Let us not be discouraged by the circumstances and ensure that we uplift the standard and we provide quality services to our communities.”
