Police in Welkom are looking for two male suspects believed to be foreign nationals after they allegedly held a 20-year-old taxi driver at gunpoint in his taxi, robbing him of his cell phone and cash.

According to police the incident occured while the taxi driver was driving around Sylvania Spar with his taxi when he was stopped by a person suspected to be a foreigner. “The person requested to be taken to Sparta in Power Road and on the way to Shoprite the driver was then pointed with a gun by the passenger and instructed to stop at BP Garage, on the corner of State Way and Heeren Street to pick up a friend of the passenger,” explained police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng.

Thakeng added that after picking up the suspect’s friend the driver was instructed to take the road to Steyn mine with the gun still pointed at him. “The driver was ordered to stop near Steyn mine and both suspects pulled him out of the car. The taxi driver fought his way from the suspects and managed to run into the bushes. After a while he went back to his car and found that the suspects had taken his cell phone and the cash that was inside the car,” said Thakeng.

A case of robbery was registered and the victim managed to compile an identikit of both suspects. Anyone who may have information regarding the identikit and or whereabouts of the suspects can contact Detective Warrant Officer Riaan De Lange of the Welkom Detective Services on 057-931-6271 during office hours.
