Scientific innovation took centre stage in Harrismith as learners from across the Bethlehem region in Free State presented research projects designed to tackle some of South Africa’s most pressing challenges at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Regional Science Fair 2026.

The event was hosted at New Horizon College (25/07), and showcased the creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities of young scientists determined to make a difference through research.
A total of 221 learners from Grades 4 to 12, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students, showcased 156 projects after progressing through Eskom Expo workshops and compulsory District Expos earlier this year. Along the way, participants received valuable guidance from judges, mentors and STEMI professionals to strengthen their research and presentation skills.
Projects were entered across 13 scientific categories, reflecting a broad range of interests and community-focused solutions. Social Sciences attracted the highest number of entries with 34 projects, followed by Engineering with 33, Environmental Studies with 22 and Energy with 17.

“Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to the schools, teachers, parents and guardians whose encouragement and support make these journeys possible,” said Bethlehem Regional Science Fair Director Lekgabe Dihlabi.
She also acknowledged the commitment of everyone involved in making the event a success.
“Thank you to our Regional Science Fair committee members, judges, mentors and volunteers, and Eskom for your commitment to developing the next generation of innovators and continued investment in Eskom Expo,” she said.

The awards ceremony recognised learners for excellence in scientific research, innovation and presentation, with 32 gold medals, 47 silver medals and 66 bronze medals awarded.
Several learners also received prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom, with each recipient receiving a smartwatch. Natasha Mwewa from The Beacon Secondary School, together with Boitumelo Mafanyolle and Realeboha Moloi from The Sentinel Primary School, received the Best Female Award.
Tumelo Thateng from The Beacon Secondary School was recognised for the Best Energy Project, while Lereko Mokhehle and Bohlokoa Finger from The Sentinel Primary School received the Best Innovation Project Award. Khatliso Mosotho and Reatile Mavundla from The Beacon Secondary School were honoured with the Best Development Project Award.
