Suspect to appear in court after allegedly raping grandmother

A 37-year old suspect from Thabong will soon appear before the court for allegedly raping his 79-year-old grandmother.

According to a statement by SAPS, the victim alleged that she had been staying alone for a month at her house in Thabong, not knowing the whereabouts of her grandson who was meant to be staying with her.

This past Sunday he arrived at her home, raped her and threatened to kill her if she notified anyone about the incident.

As a result of injuries sustained, the elderly woman was admitted at Bongani Hospital in Welkom.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Police in the Free State, Major-General Solly Lesia, appealed to the community to take care of the elderly in their community.

“It is shocking to learn about this act by someone close to the victim. The arrest of the perpetrator will ensure that he has his day in court,” Maj-Genl Lesia said.

The suspect is being detained and will appear in court on a charge of rape.
