Bloemfontein tennis courts were buzzing with energy last week as the city hosted the Tennis South Africa Junior National Championships, where South Africa’s brightest young talents battled it out for top honours.
Hundreds of up-and-coming players competed at venues across the city, including Oranje Meisieskool, Eunice Girls’ High, Grey College, the University of the Free State, Oudstudente, Mundene Tennis Club, and the Free State Tennis Stadium. Boys and girls from the under-12 to under-18 age groups took to the courts with the tournament building to an exciting climax in Sunday’s finals.
In the boys’ U18 final, top seed Dehan van Deventer, who represents Van der Stel Tennis Club in Stellenbosch, delivered a composed performance to defeat fifth seed Cooper McCarthy from Pinelands Tennis Club in Cape Town 6–2, 6–4, securing the national title in style.
Van Deventer described the win as a key moment in his season. “This is a huge achievement for me because it’s such an important tournament for the year. I’m now looking forward to playing some ITF Futures events,” he said.
There was also a proud moment for the Free State, with Cara le Grange from Hoopstad reaching the girls’ U18 final. Although she fell short in the championship match, going down 6–1, 6–3 to Meri Sandenbergh, her run to the final was a commendable achievement. Sandenbergh’s victory further underlined the strength of the Cape Town contingent at the tournament.
Interestingly, Hoopstad, is of course also the home town of argubally South Africa’s greatest-ever women’s singles player, Amanda Coetzer, who attended Oranje, and in her prime was ranked as high as third in the world.
She said the title was an important step towards her bigger ambitions. “I’m very proud of myself for winning this tournament. It was an amazing experience, and I played really well this week. Winning is such a privilege, and I’m very grateful.
“My next goal is to improve my junior ranking so I can play at the US Open at Flushing Meadows later this year. I’ll keep working hard, stay positive, and fight for that opportunity.”
In the boys’ U16 final, top seed Daniel Brink edged second seed Israel Dowie 7–5, 6–4 in a tightly contested match. The girls’ U16 final produced another thriller, with third seed Charlotte Bouwer overcoming 11th seed Lika Claassens 6–4, 2–6, 6–4.
Top seed Tristan Summers proved too strong in the boys’ U14 final, beating Alec Koch 6–3, 6–1. In the girls’ U14 final, seventh seed Ariana van der Westhuizen caused an upset by defeating top seed Winnie Masemola 6–2, 6–1.
Zoran Meyer (top seed) dominated the boys’ U12 final with a 6–2, 6–1 win over second seed David Hobson. Meanwhile, top seed Linja Erasmus claimed the girls’ U12 crown, beating third seed Lesedi Lamola 6–1, 6–3. – MORGAN PIEK
