Salaries to be cut at Gariep Municipality

REFILWE MEKOA

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Human Settlements in the Free State said they will cut salaries at Gariep Local Municipality.

According to Coghta’s HOD Victor Duma, most of the money is spend to pay political officers. During a parliamentary committee meeting on this week in Bloemfontein, he said they previously awarded the municipality R40 million per annum and will now reduce it to R15 million. He added that political officers at the Gariep municipality earned more.

“We want to force them to scale down on their expenditure and make sure that they come up innovative methods to try and increase revenue. To also come up with measures to increase job creation in their own environment, they will be able to solve the problem they are faced with,” said Duma.
