Residents resort to mob justice after FS girl went missing

The Provincial Police Commissioner of the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, has yet again warned residents against taking the law into their own hands. This comes after a suspect was fatally assaulted by community members in Botshabelo.

The suspect was last seen with 9-year-old Ausi Jonas who has been reported missing on 7 March 2021. The deceased allegedly had a quarrel the previous night with his girlfriend, who is the mother of the missing girl. The next day the mother, Nomasomi Jonas, went to report a domestic violence incident at a police station while her boyfriend was left with her daughter.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said that while the police were continuing with investigation, trying to trace the suspect, information was received that he had been fatally assaulted by the community on Friday 12 March 2021.  The girl, who has been missing ever since, was wearing a blue skirt with a blue T-shirt without any shoes when she was last seen. She is light in complexion and has long hair.

“The police appeal to residents with positive information about the whereabouts of the girl to contact Boithuso Detective Unit at 082 339 9221 or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Alternatively people can send information via MySAPS App,” said Makhele.

No one has been arrested yet in connection the murder of the suspect.
