Police minister to launch mine crime combating forum

SABRINA DEAN – The launch of a mine crime combatting forum in the North West today will emphasise the point that security is not just a police issue but a partnership between police and relevant stakeholders.
This is according to North West Police spokesperson Thulani Ngubane. He says they are hopeful the forum will result in answers to challenges around security in the mining industry.
"This is a forum where all stakeholders that have an interest in the mining sector, including labour, mine management, municipalities and roleplayers in government, all under the leadership of the SAPS, have this forum where they meet and discuss challenges and then ap the way forward," he says.
Ngubane says the issue is high on the national SAPS agenda as evidenced by the presence of Police Minister Nathi Mthetwa, who is due to officially launch the forum in Rustenburg this morning.
As the one-year anniversary of the Marikana shootings approaches, mine crimes continue to make headlines with at least one person having been killed this week in on-going union clashes. Ngubane says police will maintain a strong presence to ensure those who want to commemorate loved ones killed at Marikana last year are able to do so peacefully.
