Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of Unity on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as round the world.
This year the Chief Leeuw Foundation held a very successful beauty contest to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the African continent at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontein. The models were from countries such as Lesotho, Ghana and Ethiopia, to name but a few.
Chief Leeuw, chairperson of the foundation, says the pageant was a way to celebrate our different cultures.
“We are privileged that we have our brothers and sister of other African countries living here in Bloemfontein. We want to build a relationship with other countries, and that is why we hosted the first ever Mr and Miss Africa Day on 25 May to celebrate this historical day.
“We had 15 girls and 8 boys representing different countries in Africa and next year we hope to get finalists from different countries staying in the Mangaung Metro. The event went beyond my expectations because of the support we received from our people.
“We discover young talent every time we host events of this nature, therefore we would like to thank everyone for their support. I believe we should love each other to ensure that we learn from each other because we are people of Africa,” said Leeuw.
