Water restrictions introduced at the Masilonyana Municipality should be reduced. This is according to chairperson of the Brandfort Forum, Naas Bredenkamp. His statement comes as the municipality experiences severe water shortages.
Bredenkamp says water restrictions were not properly communicated when introduced in February this year. He, however, explains that the municipality did send out an informative letter afterwards.
Residents of Masilonyana, consisting of Theunissen, Brandfort, Winburg and Bulfontein, among others, are allowed 60% of water utilisation. According to Bredenkamp the water usage is far too high and need to be decreased.
“We need to bring down the water utilisation to 20%. It is going to be hard but we have to be more responsible as the community. South Africa is a water scarce country. We will never have the kind of water available in Europe or certain parts of America. We can continue blaming one another but unless each and every individual takes up the responsibility to look at their own action and conduct, it is to no avail to blame anyone from the outside.”
