Police are currently investigating one more case of murder after the third victim of an alleged execution-style shooting took place in Caleb Motshabi, also known as Dinaweng, in southern Mangaung. Godfrey Mbalula was hospitalised after the gruesome attack on Sunday but later succumbed to his wounds.
Although the cause of the incident has not been reported yet, according to DA Proportional Representative Councillor Eddie Raseou, the murders may have been politically motivated. “Construction has been taking place in the area and there has been tension over the recruitment processes of the projects. People in Dinaweng are not getting jobs from the construction works even though roads are being paved right where they stay,” he said.
Mbalula, along with Ward 12 branch Chairperson Molokwane Mokgoro, and a friend, were gunned down in the early hours of Sunday. Two of them were declared dead on the scene. Free State police spokesperson, Colonel Thandi Mbambo, explained that while investigations are ongoing currently, no suspects have been arrested. “Yes, the third victim died later on Monday, making it three murders. No one has been arrested yet but investigation is at an advanced stage,” she said.
Raseou and other councillors gathered at the scene to hold a vigil for the victims shortly after the incident. “We have appealed for calm in the community and asked them to cooperate with police during this time. However, we have to make sure that there will be a decent send off for the victims,” he expressed.
The victims were all male and aged between 35 and 40. The bodies were allegedly found in a field close to a construction site in Dinaweng.
